On my way home from my first experience watching a performance of the famous Japanese dancer Maro Akaji in 2007, I thought, "I want to make a doll of him.".

I am interested in the “Shaguji” of Japanese old spirits. “shagujii” means "boundaries of things" in old Japanese. The spirit is said to said to appear as "Okina" in Noh of the traditional Japanese art. Okina means "old man”.

The dancing of Maro Akaji was in the shape of a human, but it didn't look like a human to me, and it connected as “Shaguji-Okina-Maro Akaji" in my mind.

After that, I learned how to make a ball jointed doll by myself, and it took about 8 years to make the first one.

In ancient Japan, entertainers were admired as an important existence that connect with spirits. However, as shrines and temples emerged and the way people believe has changed, their roles gradually weakened and they became wandering entertainers. It became my life's work to make Butoh dancer dolls while imagining such people.

2007年に初めて麿赤兒の舞踏を観た帰り道、私は「あの人の人形を作りたい」と思いました。

私の着目する古代の精霊「シャグジ」は古い日本語で「物事の境界」という意味があり、その精霊は、日本の伝統芸能である能の「翁」として顕現しているともいわれます。

踊っている麿赤兒は人の姿をした人ではないものに見えました。そして私の中で「シャグジ＝翁＝麿赤兒」と繋がってゆきました。

以来独学で球体関節人形の作り方を学び、８年掛かって最初の１体を作りました。

古来日本で精霊を幽象させる重要な存在として崇められていた芸能者たちは、神社や寺が出現し、信仰の方法が変化してゆくにつれて徐々にその役割を追われ、放浪芸人となっていきます。そんな人々の姿を想像しながら、舞踏者の人形づくりは私のライフワークとなりました。
